"Juanito" is one of the first "Jovenes" or "Young Ones" of the 1960's that began to dance this most popular and particular style that is called "Casino" after the place where it originated: "Casino Deportivo de la Habana", today known as "Circulo Social Cristino Naranjo." Frequently they gave themselves nicknames that they used in dance clubs and parties for example: Joaquin "El Oso" the Bear, Omar "Pata de Cloche" Heavy on the Clutch, Pepe "Cara de Sueno" Sleepyhead, and Juan Gomez has always been "Juanito El Abuelo" The Grandfather. Today these performers and their nicknames are part of the popular myth of the "Rueda de Casino" in Cuba.

In 1972, Juan became one of the original founders of the musical band Moncada and has remained with them for 22 years as percussionist and a main showman.

In 1993, he promoted his intention to internationalize this dance form "Rueda de Casino" introducing it in 2 locations in Turin, Italy.

In 1994, he created the dance group "La Rueda de Casino", which has performed in the most important musical shows of Cuban television as well as Italian television with such programs there as Mauricio Contanzo and Roxy Bar and Switerland's television program TILT. Juan is the president of the panel of judges for the "Encuentro Internacional de Ruedas de Casino in Cuba". The "Rueda de Casino" and the style "casino", in general, like no other dance of all the dance forms of Cuba, has remained in style for almost fifty years and is one of the most visible features of "lo Cubano."

Juan Gomez is the president of the "Circulo de Fundadores del Estilo Casino y la Rueda" situated in Havana, Cuba. The history of Juan's relation with this dance dates back to the early 1970's when he was just barely fifteen years old. He is one of the original youths that developed the fundamental steps and movements of this dance form that has grown to become a true national passion.

Some of the prominent aspects of his resume include:

A dancer with the Cuban television program "Ballet de la Televisión Cubana".
A musician with the famous Cuban group Moncada, who with them has toured more than 20 countries of the world.
He has studied Spanish American literature at the University of Havana.

Juan graduated as an artistic promoter.

As a strong supporter of Cuban culture he has been:

Director of the group "Popular Dances "La Rueda de Casino" through which he has worked hard promoting the dance style and 'La Rueda" in Italy, where he has participated in outstanding Italian television programs of which the most prominent are The Mauricio Constanzo Show, Buona Domenica, Telethon, Tira ,Molla and Uno Mattina.

As an artistic director he has been:

Screenwriter of the television program "El mundo del casino" The World of Casino (RAI 2_Costa Est, Roma).
Director of the artistic television program "Aprenda a bailar casino" Learn to dance Casino (Video Libre, Roma).
Artistic director of the 12 series television program " El Casino de Cuba" Casino of Cuba
Instructor and artistic director of the multi media "Bailar casino es muy facil" Dancing Casino is Easy ( soon to be released internationally).

As an instructor he has given classes in 8 international schools, among the most outstanding being:
Escuela Chorus of Torino (course for professors and choreographers)
Europa Ballet of Rome.

In 2003, Juan was named President and Technical Artistic Vice President of the judicial board of "The Encuentro Internacional de Ruedas de Casino" , celebrated in Havana, Matanzas and Varadero, Cuba.

Results of the Second Annual Rueda de Casino Competition Vancouver 2005.

  • First place: Los Cumbancheros, Canada
  • Second place: Grupo America, Canada
  • Third place: TropiCuba, United States
  • Fourth Place: Las Salseritas, United States

Thanks also to Salsa Moderna for a great Timba presentation, and to Barbara Bernstein (Washington, D.C.), Russ Hamer(San Francisco, California), and Francisco (Cuba/Canada) for being judges.

The Mega Rueda Class was a well-received, "first time ever", class where several local and international teachers were teaching their own Rueda style and moves. It was an excellent opportunity to see Casineros from across North America dancing together in the same class.

Sunday night was a great display of high caliber dancing by all the teams. It is clear how much effort and enthusiasm was involved in each of the teams' routines, and the beautiful costumes just added to that. After the competition, the dance floor was open to all those who love to dance the best of the Cuban music- Timba and Salsa.

Again we want to thank all the casineros, salseros, Cuban music lovers, and all others who were at the event. We look forward to bringing you a bigger casino rueda event in 2006!
